Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this area and provides testing locations across all U.S. cities, including hair tests in your location. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for analysis. Hair tests offer the flexibility to examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or unique testing choices.

Lately, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has increasingly surpassed traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are mandating hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is preferred by firms with strict no-drug-use policies, court systems, and probation cases. Their distinct advantage lies in a broader detection timeline, often up to 90 days, using observed collection for accuracy and making it incredibly difficult to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain unmatched in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in circumference to a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair only. All other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen within a laboratory system. This process includes confirming that the specimen was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If presumptive positivity is observed during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction stage. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo a wash process before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over an approximated 90-day period, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, instead of only indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
