Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Nampa, Idaho. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we are adept in hair analysis, with facilities available in cities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, hair samples require 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp, with body hair acceptable in certain situations. These tests can be tailored for specific drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, there's been an uptick in employing hair follicle drug tests in drug screening protocols. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair testing over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug policies, judicial bodies, and probationary candidates often adopt this method. Hair tests offer extended drug use detection, up to 90 days, using supervised collection, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by locking biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to alter, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory progression of a drug analysis outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This comprises confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be admissible in court. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening do require an additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates a preliminary positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical information: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
