Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Notus, Idaho. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in this area and provide testing facilities across the nation prepared to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other bespoke testing needs.

Recently, the trend in drug screening increasingly favors hair follicle tests. Numerous organizations, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair analysis over the conventional urine assessments. This method is favored by employers implementing stringent anti-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation overseers. The standout advantage of hair tests is their extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days—obtained through observed collection, making falsification nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other types of hair (such as facial, armpit hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the laboratory is comprised of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for it to be legally admissible. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenging nature of hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire procedural flow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests that have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenges in falsification: Evading a hair drug test is quite difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Records historical usage: It can outline a timeline of drug use rather than merely reflecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair necessitates approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", this evaluation actually focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
