Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ola, Idaho. For hair drug or alcohol screenings, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with nationwide locations ready to conduct these tests. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair samples can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The trend in drug testing is moving toward hair follicle analyses more frequently in recent times. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests are utilized by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers. The key advantage is the extended detection period up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating virtually impossible. For recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands can reveal a long-term profile of alcohol and drug use, as they capture biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging strand. When obtained closely from the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. The sample is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, we suggest 150mg of the sample. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid analysis for drug presence. Although a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirming any positive screen is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples tentatively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, ensuring more precise results.
  • Reveals historical use: It can illustrate a timeline of drug usage over a period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the level of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine tests in Ola, ID? The benefits of hair testing surpass those of traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and consistency. Hair follicle tests can detect drug use over a longer span, providing a complete view of an individual’s substance habits, and they are more resistant to manipulation compared to urine samples.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Ola, ID is its extended detection window. These tests can identify drug use over approximately 90 days, giving employers a broader perspective on an employee’s or candidate’s substance history. This long-term detection capability ensures more informed hiring and monitoring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Ola, ID, hair follicle tests are a tamper-resistant method for drug screening. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are much harder to adulterate, ensuring the authenticity of the results. This reliability offers peace of mind, knowing the test outcomes are unquestionable and accurately reflect the individual’s drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
