Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pine, Idaho. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, they have centers nationwide for convenient hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair can be used. Hair tests can evaluate drug use, alcohol/ETG levels, or other specific options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained favor in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer them over standard urine tests. Hair tests are the choice for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to cheating. For drugs used within 5 days, though, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as a significant technique for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The hair encases biomarkers within its fibers, offering a prolonged narrative of alcohol and drug use as it grows. Clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for alcohol and other drugs of up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, an equivalent quantity of body hair is permissible. The term "head hair" solely pertains to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is characterized by four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes an initial, rapid examination for abuse drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening demand secondary validation.

In instances where a sample is preliminarily positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter period.
  • Impossibility of deception: Hair drug tests are extremely difficult to manipulate, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical consumption data: Hair testing can depict patterns of drug consumption over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
