Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Saint Maries, Idaho. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing across a wide network of centers nationwide, including every city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests are efficient in identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has increased significantly recently. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring hair testing over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for employers with strict drug-free policies, court mandates, and probationary supervision. The long detection window of approximately 90 days and the supervised collection make it extremely reliable, though for drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, relatively tamper-proof, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for laboratory processing of a drug test result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to dismiss drug use on most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be permissible in court. Any samples that have a likely positive result in Screening must undergo an additional confirmation.

Should a sample appear likely positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All likely positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as warranted. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical data: Provides a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variations like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
