Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Silver City, Idaho. Whether you need a hair narcotic or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments, with locations across numerous cities nationwide to facilitate these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of your head or body is required. Hair assessments can be screened for narcotics, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In the past years, the approach to conducting narcotic assessments increasingly involves hair follicle drug tests. Many workplaces, legal courts, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair assessments over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial entities, and probation individuals utilize these tests. A primary advantage of hair assessments is a prolonged detection span, typically extending to 90 days, collected under supervision, making deception nearly impossible. However, for assessments of recent substance activity within the past 5 days, urine assessments remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into an effective method for detecting use of drugs and alcohol. Hair provides a prolonged history of alcohol and other drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can’t be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial phase of processing a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the specimen was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be court admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It provides a record of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
