Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug analysis in Thornton, Idaho. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, they are experts in hair examinations and have facilities across all cities nationwide for conducting hair tests. It generally necessitates having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for most scenarios. Hair analysis can be customized for examining drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine assessments. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A significant advantage of hair drug analysis is its extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and challenging to tamper with. Yet, for detecting drug usage within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged history of substance exposure by embedding markers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection period for alcohol and drugs extending up to approximately 90 days. Collection is straightforward, alteration is quite challenging, and transport is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes alternative hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This step encompasses verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entries omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid review for drug misuse. This step is cost-efficient for negating drug presence in most samples, though a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests reveal substance consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Yields historical insights: Offers a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term “hair follicle tests” is often used, yet the assay examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
