Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Bartelso, Illinois. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analyses and have centers Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is needed, or body hair can be used. Our hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or a variety of tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly relied on hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals require a hair drug test over the standard urine type. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation supervisory bodies often use hair testing due to its longer detection window, typically extending up to 90 days, collected in a monitored process, and its resistance to tampering. However, for detecting usage within the past 5 days, the urine test still remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying both drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term indicators of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, composed of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is inadequate, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. It's important to note that when we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This phase includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, any screen yielding a positive must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample bundle and is prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any screening-positive result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug consumption up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Chronological data provision: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing modalities.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rate variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers notable advantages over traditional urine tests in Bartelso, IL. A superior detection period allows hair tests to identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a much shorter window. The accuracy of hair tests is unmatched, with results being more difficult to manipulate, providing employers with reliable findings that ensure workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Bartelso, IL, provides a significant advantage for monitoring drug use. While urine tests cover a limited timeframe, hair tests detect substances for up to 90 days. This comprehensive view aids employers in assessing long-term drug habits, promoting informed hiring or retention decisions, and fostering a safer workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
