Accredited Drug Testing offers hair follicle drug testing in Clinton, Illinois tailored to your specific needs. Our expertise in hair testing caters to both drug and alcohol evaluations at numerous centers nationwide. Generally, at least 1.5 inches of head or body hair is preferred for testing. Hair tests provide insights into drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored analysis options.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has escalated in recent times. Employers, judges, and substance abuse practitioners now prefer this over traditional urine tests. Companies enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probationary settings often rely on hair testing. Its key advantage lies in its extended detection range, typically spanning up to three months, making deception challenging. Yet, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting substances like drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a longer history of substance use by embedding biomarkers into the strands as they grow. Sampling hair close to the scalp can reveal a drug or alcohol history for about a three-month period. The collection of hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sampling involves a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) from the scalp, which yields 100mg of hair, perfect for screening and confirmation procedures. For testing purposes involving EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 drug panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of hair. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used instead. Here, "head hair" refers specifically to "scalp hair," while "body hair" includes all non-scalp hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four central phases in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about beginning the processing of a sample into the lab system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped and includes issuing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) and completing any extra data entry needed if there’s no electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, fast check for substance abuse. Although it's a cost-effective approach for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening result alone isn’t suitable for court; hence, further confirmation is necessary. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo additional verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels than in other tests (such as urine or saliva), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any positive findings after Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited according to both the CAP's (College of American Pathologists) Hair rules and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage over time: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual growth patterns can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" commonly refers to these tests, though they actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
