Providing full-spectrum hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing offers highly reliable testing solutions in Boulder, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, we are specialists in this area and have various testing centers across the nation ready to conduct your test. Typically, you will need to have hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown, although body hair can sometimes be used. Hair analysis can assess for the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or any other tailored testing requirements.

The preferred method for carrying out drug tests has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug testing in recent times. A number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are predominantly used by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary services. The notable advantage of hair testing rests in its extended drug detection window, which generally spans up to 90 days, conducted through a monitored collection procedure that's exceedingly difficult to tamper with. For detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a significant method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances because it captures biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. It involves verifying the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective strategy to discard drug usage for the majority of samples; however, a positive result must be confirmed to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging to execute.

A positive screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with initial positive results are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests may identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection window.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is immensely challenging to circumvent a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Yields historical insights: It offers a pattern of drug use over an extended period, beyond recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Influences such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
