In Edwardsville, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in providing hair testing nationwide with centers available in all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. Hair tests are applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as per needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening over the past years. Many workplaces, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair testing over traditional urine methods. Employers with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and probation cases favor hair tests for the extended detection window, observed collection, and minimal chance of circumvention. Yet, for detecting recent use (up to 5 days), urine remains the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged history of drug and alcohol intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A sample length of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For add-on tests, EtG assessments, or testing exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a proportional amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This comprises verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing other data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening presents an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although screening serves as a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive results necessitate confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples with potential positive results in Screening demand additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most sophisticated methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
