Providing extensive hair follicle drug testing in Hamel, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair or alcohol screening. With specialized centers across the nation, you can access expert hair testing in every city. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, these tests accommodate analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing programs.

In recent developments, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on the extended detection period hair tests offer, up to 90 days, which are tamper-resistant and conducted under supervised conditions. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detections within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (similarly sized to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary four steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This entails verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not generated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a fast preliminary check for drug abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples with presumed positive results in Screening need a further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are pulled from the hair at a lower concentration than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are washed before confirmation, as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting urine tests that have a reduced detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is incredibly challenging to alter hair drug test outcomes, thus increasing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a timeline of drug use over a stretch of time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It needs about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can impact the result's drug metabolite concentration.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
