Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Huey, Illinois. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly relied on hair follicle drug assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are increasingly recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers, providing a long-term history of alcohol and other drugs. When near the scalp, hair can present up to around a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab evaluation of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial cursory examination for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage for most samples; however, a positive screen must be substantiated to be legally permissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If the sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to evade: It is exceedingly challenging to circumvent a hair drug test, increasing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing types.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: While frequently dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle located underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
