Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Roxana, Illinois. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and provide services nationwide. Our centers in every city can conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair are sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method for substance detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing serves employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. Its main advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, is collected under observation, and is virtually foolproof. However, for drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as an effective means to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of nearly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample comprising 1.5 inches and approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a larger specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair isn't present, a proportional amount of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other forms (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves logging a sample into a lab's database. This includes confirming proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any missing data from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for illegal substances. While cost-effective in excluding drug use in most cases, positive screenings must undergo confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Samples that show a positive result in Screening need further verification.

If a sample tests positively in the Screening phase, more hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluids), presenting challenges in hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal substance use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which identify recent use.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally hard, increasing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: This test can indicate a pattern of substance use, covering more than just current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair analysis.
  • Expense: Generally speaking, hair drug tests cost more than alternate methods.
  • Result variability: Hair characteristics like color and personal growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these exams actually assess the hair strand, excluding the sub-scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
