Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alexandria, Indiana. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis, available at numerous testing centers across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Over recent years, the preference for conducting drug tests has shifted toward hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation officers rely on its extensive detection window, often up to 90 days, ensuring a credible collection process. Despite this, urine tests remain unrivaled for recent drug use, within a timeframe of 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the expanding strand of hair. When collected closely to the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection is straightforward, it is somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the prime sample amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be sourced. In this context, head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure where a sample is processed into a laboratory's system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in the bulk of samples; however, a positive result requires further confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is detected as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples identified as presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a utilization pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing in Alexandria, IN, surpass traditional urine tests. Hair testing is renowned for its superior accuracy and reliability in drug detection. Unlike urine tests with limited detection windows, hair tests analyze a longer history, offering a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance use. Furthermore, hair testing is less invasive and harder to tamper with.

  • Long detection period.
  • Greater accuracy than urine tests.
  • Reliable and tamper-resistant.

Extended Detection Window

In Alexandria, IN, hair follicle tests excel in providing an extended detection window for substance use. By analyzing a strand of hair, these tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days prior, offering employers an extensive overview of an individual's substance history. This ability to detect long-term drug use is pivotal for employers striving for comprehensive background checks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Alexandria, IN, stands out as a highly reliable method due to its resistance to common tampering techniques. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
