Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Boswell, Indiana. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol tests, we provide nationwide testing locations including all major cities. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown of the head, or body hair can be used in most situations. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased, being favored over traditional urine tests by many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts. Designed for organizations with strict no-drug policies, these tests are ideal for courts and probation scenarios. The key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, involving a monitored collection process that's highly resistant to tampering. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of maturing hair. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, it signifies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal steps in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into the lab’s framework. It includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data that isn’t part of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use across most samples, positive results must be substantiated to be valid in court. Any samples that indicate potential positivity in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen shows potential positivity in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to three months, while urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer, as testing is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Boswell, IN, when contrasting hair follicle testing with urine tests, the former undeniably emerges as the superior option. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
