Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Williamsport, Indiana. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty in hair testing is accessible in all major cities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is typically necessary, enabling tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized hair testing solutions.

In recent developments, drug testing methodologies have increasingly adopted hair follicle analysis. This requirement, often from employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, prioritizes hair tests over traditional urine samples. Hair follicle tests provide an extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, being overseen during collection and difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history by capturing biomarkers within the growing strand. A sample near the scalp can reveal a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

By obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, you receive 100mg, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. When performing EtG, add-ons, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advised to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If there is no scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the lab process for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the commencement of processing a sample into a lab’s system. This phase includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any necessary additional data not specified by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Even though Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in court. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the sample and processed for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is washed before confirmation as needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the ISO / IEC 17025 credentials.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Harder to manipulate: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, which makes the findings more reliable.
  • Historical usage data: It can show a trend of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs can be detected in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth changes can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Williamsport, IN Hair analysis surpasses urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests offer shorter detection windows, hair testing captures a 90-day history, providing a fuller picture of substance use. This makes hair testing preferred by employers seeking extensive and dependable screenings.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Williamsport, IN Hair follicle testing gives employers a broad insight into substance history, tracing drug use up to 90 days back. This extended detection window is invaluable for making informed decisions on employment, providing a thorough overview of an individual's habits over time, unlike the limited scope of traditional testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
