Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bristol, Indiana. We are experts in hair drug and alcohol testing and have facilities nationwide that are equipped to perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Our hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method for detecting drug use. This method is increasingly favored by employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts, as it replaces traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and probation officers prefer the longer detection window of up to 90 days that hair follicle tests offer. These tests are collected under observation and are nearly impossible to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Utilized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing is now recognized for its efficacy. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a detailed record of alcohol and drug intake over an extended period. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reflect a drug or alcohol consumption history of up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, presents challenges for tampering, and facilitates simple transportation.

To obtain an optimal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch segment consisting of nearly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional testing, and panels exceeding 10, a collection of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to utilize a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. In instances where scalp hair is insufficient, an identical quantity of body hair may be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Alternatively, body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test procedure within a laboratory context consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the first stage, Accessioning, the sample undergoes its initial incorporation into the laboratory's system. This step confirms that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any manual data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

The Screening phase serves as an initial rapid check for the presence of drugs. While this step is economically efficient for identifying the absence of drugs in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test positive in this stage must undergo secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positive samples obtained from the Screening stage require that additional hair be extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair samples at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging technique to execute.

To verify any positive findings from the Screening phase, Confirmation is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS tech. Necessary washing steps for samples are executed before Confirmation. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, in contrast to urine testing, which covers a more limited timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Due to the difficulty in compromising a hair drug test, the findings are typically more trustworthy.
  • Yields historical insight: It can illustrate drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent ingestions.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detectable drug presence in hair manifests in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other testing alternatives.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates can influence the results.

Note: Despite the frequent term "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Bristol, IN is superior to traditional urine tests due to its higher detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which are limited in scope and time frame, hair tests provide an extended window of detection, capturing a more comprehensive view of substance use over time.

This method reduces the risk of cheating as the test is observed and the collection conducted under strict supervision. As a result, hair follicle tests provide more trustworthy outcomes, reinforcing the zero-tolerance policies of many employers and judicial bodies.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing in Bristol, IN, employers benefit from an extended detection window that can trace drug use up to 90 days back. This comprehensive timeframe offers an insightful perspective on an individual's past substance history, making it a valuable tool for assessing applicants or employees.

Such an extended window surpasses the capabilities of urine tests, which detect only recent use. By examining a longer period, hair tests give employers a clearer understanding of an individual's behavior over time, aiding in informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Bristol, IN stands out as a method that's resistant to tampering, ensuring accurate and reliable results. The collection process is strictly observed, preventing any attempts at adulteration or switching samples, which is a greater risk in other forms of drug testing like urine.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
