In Country Club Heights, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, we are experts in the field and have facilities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair samples can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

More recently, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Various organizations such as employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, often use these tests. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, often up to 90 days, with sightly supervised sample collection making it hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by retaining biomarkers within the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair sample collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advocated. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifies only the scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four pivotal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This comprises affirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen necessitates validation to be court-admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other processes (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can delineate a trajectory of drug use over time, and not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Country Club Heights, IN, offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. One major benefit is the expansive detection period, which can track drug use for up to 90 days, providing a broad insight into an individual's substance use over time. This leads to a far more comprehensive assessment, which is not possible with urine testing.

Unlike urine tests that only detect recent drug use, hair testing provides a detailed substance history, which is especially beneficial for employers with strict drug-free policies. Moreover, the observed collection process of hair tests reduces the chances of sample tampering, thus enhancing test integrity and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing extends the detection window significantly, allowing for substance history analysis for up to 90 days in Country Club Heights, IN. This comprehensive view is invaluable to employers seeking to understand an employee's or candidate's drug use timeline. Unlike other testing forms, which capture short-term usage, hair testing provides thorough historical data.

This extended detection capability ensures employers gain a complete perspective on drug use trends rather than isolated instances. It provides a broader scope of data to facilitate well-informed employment decisions and ongoing evaluations, ensuring a safer and more productive workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Country Club Heights, IN, hair follicle tests offer a highly tamper-resistant drug screening method. The authentication of samples through direct observation reduces opportunities for sample adulteration, ensuring that results stand as reliable and incontrovertible evidence of drug use. This method significantly diminishes any attempts to deceive the test outcomes.

Because hair cannot be easily altered or substituted like other samples, the likelihood of tampering is minimized, providing peace of mind regarding test results' validity. Employers can rely on these results to make sound and enforceable decisions regarding workplace policies and individual assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
