Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Denham, Indiana. If you're in need of a hair-related drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing specialize in hair assessments, with centers located in all cities across the nation where hair tests can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair analysis can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly relied on hair follicle drug testing. Various employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are now mandating hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary bodies, and probation programs widely employ hair follicle tests as they offer a considerably extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are very difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair might be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial inspection for illicit drug use. Although Screening provides a cost-effective approach to excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be viable in legal proceedings. All samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine evaluations which feature a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to cheat a hair drug evaluation, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It generally requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations often cost more than other drug analysis methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
