Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grabill, Indiana. Need a hair drug or alcohol screening? Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing with centers nationwide including all cities for hair testing. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body suffices usually. Hair tests reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing variants.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years as a method for drug testing. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict no-drug-use policies, judiciary, and those on probation. They are favored for their extended detection time, up to 90 days, and are nearly tamper-proof. However, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has achieved recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of drug and alcohol presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can provide around a 3-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's database. This phase includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to final confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited conforming to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to circumvent, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical patterns: Provides insights into drug use trends over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth rates may influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this process analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Grabill, IN

Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine analysis in Grabill reveals superior detection accuracy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
