Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Hartford City, Indiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair-based testing, and we maintain facilities nationwide to accommodate hair testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair testing over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation for their ability to track drug use for up to 90 days. While they offer a longer detection window, urine tests are still more accurate for recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair may be acquired. Regarding head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample upon entry into a lab's system. It includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use on most samples, but a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

In instances where a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
