Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Herbst, Indiana. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing locations nationwide where hair tests can be executed. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for special testing needs.

The trend in recent years has seen drug screenings increasingly incorporate hair follicle assessments. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists are favoring hair tests over the traditional urine-based methods. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers utilize hair follicle tests due to their prolonged detection capability, up to 90 days, and observed collection process, reducing chances of meddling. Yet, for recent drug consumption within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, somewhat resilient to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory sample processing within a laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial, rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can disclose drug utilization for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is significantly challenging to alter hair drug tests, ensuring more precise results.
  • Reveals usage history: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the procedure assesses the hair strand, not the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
