Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Knightsville, Indiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers available in every city across the nation that can conduct hair tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

In recent times, the method for conducting drug tests increasingly features hair follicle assessments. Many organizations, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle exams are employed by employers with zero-drug-use policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed during the collection process, making it difficult to manipulate. Yet, for pinpointing recent drug consumption within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal data for up to a roughly three-month period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair refers to other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary stages are involved in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into the lab system. This includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances. It is a cost-efficient means to discount substance usage in the majority of samples; however, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in comparison to urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's quite difficult to tamper with hair drug tests, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of substance use, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why opt for hair follicle testing over urine in Knightsville, IN? The answer lies in its superior detection capabilities and reliability. Unlike urine tests which may miss certain substances or ingestion timelines, hair follicle testing provides a more comprehensive picture.

Hair testing offers unmatched detection accuracy with a greater timeframe of analysis. While urine tests might miss certain drugs due to shorter detection windows, hair tests cover past substance use more effectively, making them a more reliable choice.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Knightsville, IN, enables the detection of drug use over a prolonged period, up to 90 days. This extended window gives employers a thorough insight into the substance history of an applicant or employee, ensuring informed decisions.

The prolonged detection period of hair follicle testing surpasses that of traditional methods. Offering insights into a user's substance habits, this testing method provides a comprehensive overview over three months, beneficial for thorough background checks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are inherently tamper-resistant, offering Knightsville, IN, unmatched reliability. The collection process is closely monitored, reducing opportunities for sample adulteration and ensuring the integrity of the results.

Utilizing hair samples fora drug testing significantly minimizes the risk of manipulation. Knightsville employers can rely on this method's robustness, as it provides accurate, untainted insights into an individual's drug usage habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
