Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Laurel, Indiana. When a hair or alcohol test is necessary, we excel in hair analysis, with facilities in all cities nationwide prepared to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have seen an increased shift towards hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary bodies, and individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, strict observation during collection, and resilience to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain ideal for screening recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an efficient means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Collecting hair near the scalp can reveal drug use up to a roughly 3-month window for alcohol and other substances. The process of gathering hair is straightforward, it's moderately challenging to tamper with, and it’s simple to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches of nearly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal sample for screenings and validations. For EtG, additional investigations, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen utilizing a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair references any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure of processing a drug test result in the laboratory involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. It involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry unavailable in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient tactic to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive result must be validated to be acceptable in legal contexts. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the hardest methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is calibrated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more credible results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth patterns can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair shaft, not the root below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Laurel, IN, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. One key advantage is its extended detection window, effectively identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, compared to shorter time frames for urine tests. This allows employers a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use history. With greater detection precision, hair tests often yield more reliable results.

Employers value hair drug testing for its enhanced accuracy over urine tests. The testing method is less susceptible to manipulation, ensuring authenticity in results. As workplace safety and integrity become increasingly critical, the benefits of hair follicle drug testing over urine options continue to be evident, providing employers with a robust tool for monitoring and ensuring a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

In Laurel, IN, the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing stands out as a critical advantage. Unlike other tests, it can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, equipping employers with a comprehensive snapshot into an individual's substance use history. This broader view aids in making more informed hiring or personnel decisions, safeguarding workplace integrity.

The capacity of hair follicle tests to track drug use over an extensive period is invaluable. It provides a detailed understanding of an employee's past substance interactions, adding a layer of assurance for employers seeking to maintain a drug-free environment. This prolonged observational capability is unmatched, firmly positioning hair follicle testing as a superior choice for comprehensive drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
