Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Malden, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is on your list, we are experts in hair testing, with locations in every city nationwide to conduct hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body. We offer tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, including other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening processes has become more prevalent. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and those on probation employ these tests for their extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making them difficult to tamper with. The urine test, however, remains the best method for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strand, providing an extended history of substance use. A sample taken near the scalp offers up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial testing and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It is preferable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (i.e., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is systematized into a lab’s data. It involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and augmenting any unentered data absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening facilitates a preliminary drug abuse check. It's a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in many samples, yet any positive result must be substantiated for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this juncture, drug compounds are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening notably challenging.

The Confirmation step for any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Preceding confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing based on necessity. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory workflow is scrutinized for compliance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests ascertain drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Low likelihood of manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is immensely difficult, therefore enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides usage patterns: It reveals a comprehensive usage pattern over time, surpassing mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs manifest in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variability may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Malden, IN, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing are evident. One significant benefit is the superior detection accuracy that hair testing provides. While urine tests might miss certain drugs or provide shorter detection windows, hair tests offer a comprehensive overview of an individual’s drug use history. This makes hair testing a more reliable method for those who need accurate results.

Another area where hair testing excels is in its ability to minimize the risk of tampering. Unlike urine samples, which can be adulterated, hair samples undergo rigorous analysis, ensuring that the outcome is both accurate and unquestionable. This reliability makes it the preferred option for those seeking a fraud-resistant drug testing method in Malden, IN.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, a substantial advantage for employers in Malden, IN. This lengthy period allows for a detailed assessment of a person's substance use over time, providing a comprehensive substance history. For those looking to understand an applicant's or employee's drug usage, this extended window offers valuable insights.

The ability to detect drug use over such a prolonged timeframe makes hair testing an invaluable tool for organizations. It not only helps in assessing historical substance use but also assists in making informed decisions concerning employment, benefiting companies in maintaining a productive and drug-free workplace in Malden, IN.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests provide a tamper-resistant method that ensures the integrity of results in Malden, IN. This testing process significantly reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, offering precise and unquestionable results. For individuals and organizations prioritizing reliable outcomes, hair testing is a superior choice, ensuring that samples remain genuine and unaffected by manipulation attempts.

The robust nature of hair follicle testing lies in its resistance to tampering. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are less prone to adulteration, which enhances the reliability of the results. This makes hair testing in Malden, IN an effective solution for obtaining accurate and credible drug test results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
