Based in Middletown, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. Whether seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, you can rely on our hair testing expertise. We operate nationwide testing centers capable of executing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair is needed, but body hair can also be used. These tests evaluate the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

The method of drug screening has increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing in recent years. This shift sees many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists favoring hair tests over standard urine methodologies. Employers bound by zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation subjects commonly use hair tests. The primary strength of hair testing lies in its extended drug detection window up to 90 days, with a highly secure collection process that minimizes tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing serves as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture biomarkers in its fibers, providing a comprehensive history of substance use as it grows. When extracted near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. The specimen should ideally be weighed on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, it denotes scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into a lab's system, which involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for abuse substances. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive finding requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples presumed positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of screening results occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical information: It presents a drug use pattern over time, rather than focusing solely on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variation in outcomes: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
