Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Market, Indiana. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing ensures reliable results. With centers nationwide, testing is conveniently accessible. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, but body hair may be used. Drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options can be analyzed.

Over the years, drug testing methods have increasingly transitioned towards hair follicle tests. This shift is due to growing demands from employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals for more stringent testing. Hair tests uphold zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements, boasting a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days. While urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use, it's tough to circumvent the hair testing procedure.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a crucial method for identifying usage of alcohol and drugs. Hair serves as a record of extended alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair that is growing. Collected near the scalp, hair might offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and various other drugs. Hair is uncomplicated to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, or screenings covering more than 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis resulting in a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies the sample’s sealed and proper shipment, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any lacking data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive outcome needs confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Any sample indicating a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo a further confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is considerably lower in comparison to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

To confirm any positive result from screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are utilized. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, encompassing Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and also complies with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests are capable of revealing drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Attempting to circumvent a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus making the results more dependable.
  • Historic use patterns: Provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual growth rates may affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand itself, not the under-scalp hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
