Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pendleton, Indiana. When in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing offers expert hair testing. Our centers are located in all cities across the nation and can conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2-inch hair samples from the scalp or body are required. Tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a component in drug testing procedures over recent years. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. These tests have been adopted by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals under probation. Hair follicle tests offer a longer detection span, up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it difficult to falsify. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting both alcohol and drug usage. It captures a long-lasting record of substance and alcohol consumption by sealing biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a detection period of roughly 3 months. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests surpassing 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent mass of body hair may be used. In context, head hair specifically means scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase, encompassing the integration of a sample into the laboratory's processing framework. This step involves confirming the sample's secure sealing and proper shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial, rapid evaluation for drug usage is performed. Screening serves as a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use across the majority of samples; however, a positive screen requires verification to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples tentatively positive at the Screening stage necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, a further quantity of hair is taken from the original sample and arranged for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair with lower concentrations than seen in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair analysis is one of the most complex methodologies to undertake.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. Each stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug analysis is extremely hard, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair in around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations generally cost more than other drug-testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the testing actually focuses on the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
