Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Tyner, Indiana. Specializing in hair screenings for drugs and alcohol, we have centers nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is required, though body hair may also be used. Results can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a method for drug detection. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies find hair tests useful, as they provide a longer detection period—up to 90 days—and are nearly impossible to manipulate. However, tests for drug use within the past 5 days are still most accurately conducted via urine analysis.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drugs by integrating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can present a detection window reaching up to about 3 months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately pencil-sized) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the perfect amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional substances, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair exclusively pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Within Screening, a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse occurs. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates validation to hold up in legal settings. Any samples flagged as positive during Screening must undergo a further confirmation.

For samples indicating a positive result during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are sourced from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the highest methodological challenge.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected as positive are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests reveal drug use extending up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter time frame of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, leading to more trustworthy results.
  • Historical insight: Capable of outlining a pattern of drug use over time, and not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lack of immediate detection: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and unique hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly mentioned as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
