Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Washington, Indiana. If you find yourself in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert with facilities in cities all across the nation equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for special testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly supplanted traditional methods in detecting drug use. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prioritize hair testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are essential for employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, legal authorities, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair drug tests is their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, using a watched collection process that ensures accuracy. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an influential mechanism for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and other substances by capturing markers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional items, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest gauging the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses verifying the sample was securely sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out substance use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample seems positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration than with other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot ascertain recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
