Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Jasper, Indiana. For those requiring a hair or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing with centers across the U.S. capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening, favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over urine tests. Organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, probation officers, and courts frequently opt for hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days and the difficulty in tampering with results. However, urine tests remain most effective for detecting very recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use. Hair serves as a repository documenting longer-term substance consumption, capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it offers around a 3-month detection period for substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, manipulating it is somewhat challenging, and transporting is hassle-free.

A sample of hair about 1.5 inches long and comprising roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for preliminary and confirmatory analyses. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and/or those surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be procured. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. All other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary) are classified as body hair.

Process Overview

The four critical steps in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. It confirms the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entries missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drugs. While it's a cost-efficient way to exclude substance use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test positive initially necessitate further confirmation.

If results are presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair from the sample is retrieved and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations unlike other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair testing presents a complex challenge.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can trace drugs up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Test integrity: Assessing hair for drugs is considerably hard to fake, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Historical insights: It enables tracing drug usage trends over time, beyond just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate usage: Drugs become recognizable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug-testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand itself and not the root beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
