Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Whitewater, Indiana. When in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, consult Accredited Drug Testing for specialized services. We operate testing centers across all Nationwide cities, providing hair testing capabilities. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or, alternatively, body hair. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle tests have garnered increased application in drug testing across recent years. This method is now often preferred by employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation personnel frequently rely on hair drug tests. The chief advantage of hair tests is an extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, along with the credibility of being collected under observation and the improbability of evading the test. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the initial 5 days of consumption.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step in entering a sample into a lab’s system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are pulled from the hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is amongst the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceptionally tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle tests over traditional urine testing offers significant benefits in Whitewater, IN.Hair testing detects substances with superior accuracy, minimizing false positives common in urine analysis.
Moreover, hair tests encompass a longer detection window, capturing habitual substance use patterns that urine tests might miss, providing a comprehensive analysis framework.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
