Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Woodlawn Heights, Indiana. For hair or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we have centers across the nation ready for hair sample analysis. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. These tests reveal the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prevalence recently. This alternative to urine testing is now demanded by various employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. They favor this method for its stringent policies against drug use. Its chief advantage is an extended detection timeline, generally covering up to 90 days, with an observed collection method that is virtually foolproof. However, it’s noteworthy that urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent drug use, within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, providing a long-term history of substance use. When sourced close to the scalp, hair offers a detection duration of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification purposes. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a quick efficiency check for drug abuse indicators. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive outcome is necessary for legal validity. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening need secondary verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration lower than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), accounting for hair drug testing's complex nature.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter durations.
  • Harder to manipulate: These tests are challenging to falsify, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use over extended periods, unlike tests detecting only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Detection delay: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: These tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rate variations impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
