Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing facilities in Bush City, Kansas. Our expertise is in hair drug and alcohol testing, with centers nationwide. We require a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches, with both crown and body hair eligible. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailor-made options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has surged, often replacing urine tests for many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Such tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers and probationary entities. A significant advantage is their 90-day detection window, offering observed collection and minimal cheating opportunities. For recent usage, urine tests still excel in accuracy within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers an extended timeline of substance use. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a history of alcohol and other substances up to roughly a 3-month period. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly as thick as a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a recommendation of 150mg is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't present, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When we discuss head hair, it's exclusive to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes any other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, the allotment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening offers an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While it's a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most cases, any positive outcome requires subsequent confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other procedures (such as urine or oral fluids), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug testing methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug testing is very difficult to compromise, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronological usage data: Provides insights into patterns of drug use over time, not restricted just to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drug presence becomes discernible in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result fluctuations: Variations such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
