Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Dover, Kansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in this field and have testing centers nationwide, including all cities capable of conducting hair tests. You typically require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug test protocols. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine ones. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary monitoring due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection method, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a lengthy record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of specimens. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, the equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This phase comprises confirming the sample was sealed and transported adequately, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substances of misuse. Although it's a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screen demands confirmation to be permissible in legal contexts. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology in practice.

Any positive screening outcome undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug examinations can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited window.
  • Hard to deceive: It's extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dover, KS, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in many aspects. One of the key advantages is its accuracy and reliability, allowing for a trustworthy drug detection method. Hair tests are superior in terms of detecting substance use over extended periods, unlike more traditional urine tests.

While urine tests detect recent use, hair follicle tests offer a comprehensive look at an individual’s drug history, enhancing their appeal to employers and legal systems.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Dover, KS, offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days for drug use. This lengthy timeframe provides employers with a comprehensive overview of an individual’s substance use, enhancing the screening process.

This extended window is particularly beneficial for gaining insight into long-term drug consumption patterns, which urine tests cannot provide. It's an invaluable tool for informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-resistant methods in hair follicle testing greatly reduce the risk of sample adulteration. In Dover, KS, this aspect offers a level of reliability and unquestionable results that are crucial in maintaining test integrity.

The challenge of altering a hair sample compared to urine guarantees credibility in results, providing peace of mind for those relying on accurate testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
