Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for substance use in Harding, Kansas. Need a hair test for drugs or alcohol? We excel in hair testing and have centers nationwide that offer these services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is used for testing. Hair samples effectively detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as per specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in substance detection. It's increasingly used by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with no-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers often rely on hair tests which offer detection for up to 90 days and are not easy to manipulate. Still, urine tests are preferred for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a crucial method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. It offers an extended history of substances by embedding biomarkers in the expanding hair strand. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it provides roughly a 3-month period to detect alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we're specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample's seal and shipment are intact, assigns it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes any additional data that wasn’t provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening acts as a preliminary drug abuse detection. It is a cost-efficient strategy to dismiss drug presence in most samples, yet a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples that test positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In cases where Screening returns a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair screening the most intricate method.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Importantly, samples that are presumptively positive are washed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is governed by both the CAP Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to alteration: It is highly challenging to manipulate hair drug tests, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: There is a lag of about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are often more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine tests in Harding, KS? The benefits are clear. Hair tests provide unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability, capturing drug use history beyond the scope of traditional methods. While urine tests cover short windows, hair tests excel in offering a comprehensive substance use profile.

In Harding, KS, hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window, analyzing drug use up to 90 days prior. This advantage gives employers insight into an individual's long-term substance history. Such extensive detection allows a more complete assessment of an employee, outperforming traditional testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
