Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Maple Hill, Kansas. If you're in need of hair or alcohol testing, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in this area and provide testing centers across all cities in the United States capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific purposes.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in recent years for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A key advantage is their extended detection window, typically covering up to 90 days and collected under observation, making it difficult to falsify results. Nevertheless, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can furnish up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both initial screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG evaluations, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen's weight using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The four essential phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes primary processing within the laboratory system. This phase ensures the sample has been sealed and dispatched appropriately, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry missed by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening offers a preliminary swift evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screens must be corroborated to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation process.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Offers usage history: It can disclose a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Does not identify recent usage: Detection in hair occurs approximately 5-7 days post drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
