Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mound City, Kansas. If there’s a need for a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for the test, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug examination and is often required by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals over the conventional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probation candidates frequently resort to hair testing. Its main advantage over urine tests is the extended detection window of about 90 days. The test is conducted under supervision, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. For recent drug use detection (within 5 days), however, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use by trapping biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair might be gathered. References to head hair specifically relate to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be considered valid in court. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected positive are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, which enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mound City, KS
In the comparison of hair follicle versus urine tests, hair testing emerges superior due to its much longer detection period and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a 90-day window, ensuring a comprehensive overview of an individual’s drug history. This expansive detection scope enhances accuracy and reliability.

Testing with hair samples provides detailed and unobstructed insights into drug habits that urine analyses might otherwise miss; hair's superior detection and consistency push it ahead in the field of drug testing strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
