Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rexford, Kansas. If a hair or alcohol drug test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, operating facilities Nationwide ready to execute such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, taken from the head or body, is needed. Hair assessments can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often require this test over typical urine evaluations. Hair follicle drug tests cater to employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and those on probation. The key advantage is its longer drug-use detection span, up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. Yet, for drug use screening within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the burgeoning hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for examination and verification. For EtG, additional checks, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample's weight. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair applies to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for drugs of misuse. Even though Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage on most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to be permissible in court. All samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other approaches (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers chronological data: It can present a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests," the examination itself inspects the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
