Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Saint Francis, Kansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses and operates testing facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Most trials require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair screenings can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized parameters.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for these tests over traditional urine screenings. Businesses with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services favor hair follicles to detect drug use. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. However, for use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term recorder of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair—the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically; body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves these four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample as it enters a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse is conducted. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be acceptable in court. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a briefer detection timeline.
  • Difficult to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often more expensive than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Saint Francis, KS, hair follicle tests stand out when gauged against conventional urine tests, offering a broader detection period. They provide enhanced accuracy and minimize the opportunities for tampering. This makes them the preferred choice for businesses prioritizing consistent substance oversight.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
