Wheeler, Kansas residents can rely on Accredited Drug Testing for comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, we've got you covered with specialized hair testing services and national testing centers ready to conduct hair tests in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, either from the head or body. Our tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options for hair testing.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in drug testing methodologies in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer it over the conventional urine test. These tests are favored by employers with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and probation supervision. A major advantage of these tests is their ability to detect drug use over a longer period, usually up to 90 days, ensuring a nearly foolproof and observed process. For drug use within the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of developing hair strands. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to collect 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When referring to head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This consists of verifying that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is noted as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are appropriately washed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug analysis techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
