Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Xenia, Kansas. If you require testing for substances or alcohol via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialized service provider with centers available in cities nationwide. Typically, either 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere on the body is required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly employed for substance assessments. A wide range of entities, including employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse treatment, favor hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Organizations enforcing no-drug-use policies, judiciary bodies, and probation services rely on these tests. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection capability, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them virtually foolproof. However, urine tests remain more precise for usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for pinpointing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands, due to their biological makeup, retain evidence of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers into their growing fibers. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp secures 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's advised to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. In discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely; body hair encompasses all remaining hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary procedures take place in the lab analysis of a drug test, including Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's framework. This encompasses ensuring the sample's secure sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any absent data not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary examination for substance misuse. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient approach to establish drug presence in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court validity. Samples that appear positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample emerges as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial collection for the Extraction process. In this stage, narcotics are withdrawn from hair at notably lesser concentrations than other procedures (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing highly complex.

Confirmation of any presumptive screening results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the comprehensive lab workflow is verified under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Up to 90 days of drug use can be discovered via hair drug tests, in contrast to urine tests which detect only recent use.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It enables identifying drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests come at a higher price than other testing protocols.
  • Variations in results: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth variances might influence the degree of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
