Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing solutions in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Whether your need is for a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our facilities across every city in the nation are equipped to administer hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

The hair follicle drug test has been increasingly preferred for drug screenings in recent years. This method is favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. It is especially utilized by organizations with strict drug-free policies, by judicial entities, and for individuals on probation. The advantage of a hair follicle test is its longer detection window, often up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and offering minimal opportunities for tampering. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective resource for detecting substance and alcohol use. Hair preserves a prolonged chronology of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When procured close to the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, serving as the optimal sample for analysis and validation. When it comes to EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair solely pertains to scalp hair. Other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are termed body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for abusive drugs. While this method is economical for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive findings necessitate confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo cleansing as needed before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating a hair drug assessment is notably challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Provision of historical insights: Hair assessments can offer a timeline of drug usage over time, not limited to recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth rate variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
