It is especially utilized by organizations with strict drug-free policies, by judicial entities, and for individuals on probation. Hair assessments have emerged as an effective resource for detecting substance and alcohol use. Hair preserves a prolonged chronology of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When procured close to the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.
A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, serving as the optimal sample for analysis and validation. When it comes to EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair solely pertains to scalp hair. Other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are termed body hair.
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for abusive drugs. While this method is economical for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive findings necessitate confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary verification.
Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.
Positive screening confirmations are executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo cleansing as needed before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
