Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Glenville, Kentucky. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities available across all cities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head's crown or body. Analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair test options.

In the last few years, drug testing more often incorporates the use of a hair follicle test. Increasingly, employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair analysis over conventional urine testing. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation utilize hair tests. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is extending the drug use detection timeframe to roughly 90 days, collected under observation, and being almost fail-safe. Yet for detecting very recent drug use, such as within the past 5 days, urine testing remains sought after.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair contains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can exhibit up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hairstands are easy to gather, fairly hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hairs (about as thick as a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Regarding head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase in which a sample is processed into the lab's system. This stage includes verifying the sample's seal and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick scan for abuse drugs. Though Screening is a cost-efficient technique to exclude drug usage in many samples, a positive Screening result must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positives in the Screening stage, more hair is removed from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are pulled out from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug tests the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, thus enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Delivers past data: Hair tests can reveal a long-term drug use pattern, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent intake: Drugs become visible in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variations might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though usually termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand itself, not on the hair follicle beneath the skin

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
