Accredited Drug Testing facilitates comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Reed, Kentucky. For hair drug or alcohol testing needs, Accredited Drug Testing is a premier provider, offering extensive hair testing services through numerous centers across the nation. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is necessary in most cases. These tests are capable of detecting drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with custom hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a drug screening method. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring this over traditional urine tests. These tests are chosen by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, by courts, and for individuals on probation. A key advantage of this method is its long detection span, typically covering up to 90 days, conducted in a supervised manner, making it nearly tamper-proof. For evaluating recent drug use within the last 5 days, however, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a history of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is easy, it's relatively challenging to tamper with, and it can be shipped without hassle.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s balance. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair only, while body hair includes any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Outline

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes preliminary processing into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to discount drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptively positive Screening results necessitate additional confirmation.

For samples showing a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug testing as a notably complex process.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to alter: Cheating a hair drug test is very hard, which increases the accuracy of results.
  • Shows usage over time: It offers a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Recent use undetectable: It typically requires 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Reed, KY
Hair follicle tests offer lasting benefits over traditional urine testing by detecting substance use over extended periods. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to detecting recent use, hair tests offer a prolonged detection window, thus enhancing accuracy and reliability. This makes them more effective for ensuring adherence to drug-free policies.

Advanced detection capabilities of hair testing offer a clearer representation of drug use history, better than conventional urine tests. The reliability of this method is a major draw for employers seeking to uphold safety and productivity. The extended detection period adds a level of scrutiny not possible with short-term assessment methods like urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
