Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in River Bluff, Kentucky. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with numerous testing sites established nationwide. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. These tests can screen for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate custom hair testing needs.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug testing over recent years. Employers with zero drug tolerance, court systems, and substance abuse counselors opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine screens. The key advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, with secure and tamper-evident collection. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair strand as it grows, hair can chart a prolonged history of substance intake. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can indicate drug or alcohol use over a time span of up to three months. This method is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, composed of roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in size) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—considered the optimal quantity for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results encompasses four chief stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample once it arrives at a laboratory. This entails ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening provides a rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient way to eliminate possible drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation to stand in legal proceedings. All samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate additional validation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the original sample and is prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug testing presents the greatest challenge in testing methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed to validate any positive results from the screening. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a cleaning process if required. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
