Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is used. Hair tests are analyzable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards the hair follicle method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer a hair drug test over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationers. A major advantage is their extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and difficult to evade. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional examinations, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result during Screening need secondary confirmation.

When a Screening yields a presumptive positive outcome, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from the hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High challenge to alter results: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical data provision: It delivers a long-term pattern of drug use, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally exceed the cost of other drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Variables such as hair color and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Breaux Bridge, LA, hair follicle testing often surpasses traditional urine tests in effectiveness. Hair testing offers a more extended detection period and boosted accuracy, reducing the chances of false negatives. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
