Located in Calcasieu, LA, Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair, drug, and alcohol testing, we have nationwide facilities to conduct assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. These tests can assess drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a prominent method for detecting substances in recent times. Employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists often favor this over traditional urine analysis. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services find it invaluable. Its advantage lies in an extended detection window of up to 90 days, nearly impossible to bypass, though urine tests remain optimal for drug use detection within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have gained recognition as a critical means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the growing strand fibers. When cut close to the scalp, it can reveal a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for both alcohol and other substances. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for shipping.

An optimal sample consists of a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's girth) nearest the scalp, yielding 100mg—the preferred amount for screening and validation. For EtG enhancements or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, a similar mass of body hair can be harvested. References to head hair are exclusively about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a drug test outcome in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into lab operations. This task includes confirming the seal and proper shipment of the sample, the issuance of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Despite being economical for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive screen needs confirmation to stand in legal settings. All presumptive positives in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

Should a sample yield a positive result in Screening, further hair is appropriated from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are derived from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or saliva), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized to affirm any positive screen results. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing as required. The entire procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug utilization for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests' shorter timeframe.
  • Minimal risk of deception: Manipulating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can delineate a drug usage pattern over a timeframe, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It takes close to 5-7 days before substances are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other methods.
  • Results variability: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests inspect the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
